Electrical & Electronic Measurements syllabus topics

The following topic groups come from the syllabus content included in this study hub. Consult the official GATE 2027 website for examination updates.

  1. Bridges and Potentiometers,
  2. Measurement of voltage, current, power, energy and power factor;
  3. Instrument transformers,
  4. Digital voltmeters and multi-meters,
  5. Phase, Time and Frequency measurement;
  6. Oscilloscopes,
  7. Error analysis.

How to prepare this subject

  1. Check topic coverage. Work through the groups above and mark unfamiliar concepts.
  2. Learn and practise. Study one relevant reference book, then solve worked examples without looking at the solutions.
  3. Apply concepts. Use GATE EE previous-year questions to assess where you need additional practice.
  4. Revise and test. Create a short formula or concept sheet and reattempt questions you initially missed.

STEP-BY-STEP LEARNING

Voltmeter full-scale accuracy and loading error

Separate instrument tolerance from circuit disturbance when estimating voltage measurement accuracy.

Key learning goal: Calculate percentage-of-reading error from full-scale specifications and understand the loading caused by finite meter resistance.

Read the detailed worked example and self-check question →

Quick concept check: On a 100 V range with the same 1%-of-full-scale accuracy, what is the absolute tolerance and percentage of reading at 50 V?

Check the answer

The tolerance becomes ±1 V, corresponding to ±2% of the 50 V reading. This statement concerns accuracy; loading depends on the meter input resistance.

Common pitfalls: Mistaking percentage of full scale for percentage of reading. Adding the voltmeter resistance in series instead of in parallel with the measured element.
